Along the Haast River to Lake Wanaka

From Lake Matheson we drove south to the Haast River – a huge outflow that would be amazing to see in the spring when full of melt-water.

Then it was up the Haast River valley we went to Lake Wanaka, stopping at a few places to enjoy the amazing views on this sunny and calm day.

After arriving in the beautiful lakeside town of Wanaka, checking into my hostel and enjoying a cold drink on the sun-soaked beach, I did the hour hike up Mount Iron for some sunset views of the surrounding countryside.  A perfect end to a perfect day!

The following day turned very windy, so instead of doing a big mountain hike as planned, I had a more leisurely day – doing a shorter walk to the Rippon Vineyard, which is located on the hillside overlooking the lake.  Great views & great wine!
