Northern New Zealand – Paihia / Bay of Islands / Cape Reinga

The first leg of my 6 week New Zealand tour was north from Auckland to areas renowned for their clear waters, huge ancient Kauri forests, the Bay of Islands, Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach.  I enjoyed 3 nights in Paihia with a day trip to the top of NZ (Cape Reinga); sand boarding down giant sand dunes at Te Paki stream; swimming in the Tasman sea; and a day’s sailing trip in the Bay of Islands.

Sand boarding is quite a lot of fun! Hard work climbing up the 45 dune though..

Kauri trees in the Puketi Forest are nearly 1000 years old. Kauri trees were once used for building canoes before some clever guy invented aluminium!
